Porpoise stranded 5km UPSTREAM from the causeway on April 21st, 2011.

E. coli Bacteria kills!!!

Latest Ecoli count 78,000 per 100ml 12km upstream from causeway!!!

LAPPA maintains that the Proponents of the Petitcodiac River Causeway Project (ie. the current Provincial Department of Supplies and Services) are being negligent for not informing the public about the NEW Health & Safety concerns associated with their project. It will be most unfortunate when someone's child get seriously ill or worse, and the public finds out that such a tragedy could have been easily prevented! Instead the Proponents are actively promoting recreation on the river and they have NO intention of doing their own water quality testing until sometime in September. Let's hope it is not too late and that LAPPA's effort to try and inform the public about the dangers will prevail!

EVERY water sample collected, by LAPPA members upstream from the causeway since the causeway gates were opened on April 14, 2010 has show that E.coli bacteria counts are WAY too numerous making the water completely UNFIT for any kind of HUMAN contact - including fishing from shore! Pets should stay out as well. The highest E.coli counts found so far upstream from the causeway since opening the gates was 78,000/100ml; In freshwater 200 counts/100ml is the max for primary contact; 1000 counts/100ml for secondary contact. Since E.coli does not survive well in saltwater finding these kind of elevations in the tidal portion of the Petitcodiac River are more cause for concern!NEW

AMEC (2009) has found E.coli counts as high as 179,000/100ml of water at Gunningsville Bridge! Their results (link above) also show that the E.coli counts in the former headpond area BEFORE opening the gates were all within Health Canada recreational guidelines. There is NO DOUBT that the former Liberal Province Goverment knew that this pollution would be carried further inland once the gates were opened as can be supported by the fact that they changed LAWS to allow it to happen! NEWNEW

TO DATE (June 18, 2010) The Proponents of the Petitcodiac River Causeway Project have NOT carried out any water quality monitoring since they opened the flood gates and they don't intend to do any until sometime in September - this according to Jacques Paynter lead consultant for the project. Presumably they are putting the pollution testing off until after the September election despite the KNOWN risks to human health & safety! NEWNEW

[PRESS RELEASE: More Garbage Exposure at Moncton Landfill despite Jonathan Creek Diversion] NEW

Recent surface water quality testing done by LAPPA outside the erosion protection placed around the former Moncton landfill site showed some shocking findings; Aluminium, Arsenc, Lead, Cadmium, Chromium, Iron, Copper, Titanium and Zinc ALL exceed freshwater and marine guidelines to support aquatic life! LAPPA has filed a complaint with Environmental Canada's Environmental Protection Agency and asked them to investigate the situation.

LAPPA also recently filed for a temporary Injuction to have the Petitcodiac River Causeway Gates closed until we have a hearing to prove that the Province acted unlawfully by not completing Stage 1 of the project before proceeding to Stage 2 - which was a condition of the EIA approval.

The Court of Queens Bench concluded that LAPPA INC., had "Standing" and the right to file an injunction against the Crown because they may have acted outside the law. The gates were not closed because the Province provided assurances that they would be monitoring the situation very closely and close the gates to mitigate any undesirable situation(s). LAPPA intends to move forward with this case. Donations for our Legal Fund can be mailed to LAPPA P.O. Box 1664, Moncton NB E1C 9X5. NEW
